It is taken from the world's largest gem diamond "Cullinan", discovered in the Premier Mine of South Africa on January 21, 1905, weighing up to 3106 carats. Subsequently, "Cullinan" was cut into many diamonds of different sizes, the largest being called "African Star No. I" and the second largest being called "African Star No. II".

The African Star I is the largest diamond in the world, with a drop shape and weighing 530.2 carats. It has 74 facets and is inlaid on the scepter of the British king. It is now treasured in Buckingham Palace in England. Africa Star II is the second largest diamond in the world, square, weighing 317.40 carats. It has 64 faces and is inlaid on the crown of the Queen of England.
